A group of unknown Bostonians braved the massive snowstorm that hit the northeast and cleared snow from the Boston Marathon finish line.

Boston got more than its share of the blizzard that hammered the northeast this week, receiving more than two feet of snow. However, the spirit of the city was defined by a group of unknown volunteers who took the time to shovel snow off the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

Long a staple of the city, the Marathon has become more entwined in the city’s culture since the bombing near the finish line in 2013, killing three and injuring 264 others. That there were those who braved the elements and made the effort to preserve one of the city’s hallowed landmarks speaks volumes to their love of Boston.

Their work will not be in vain, as Adidas has stepped up in a big way:

Forget DeflateGate, the misery that has defined the Celtics’ rebuilding process and the underachieving Bruins: this should be the sports story that Boston fans should focus on this week. While the #BostonStrong slogan and hashtag has been overused at times, this is one moment in which it is a perfect fit.

Whoever those unsung heroes are, it’s our hope that they are recognized for their unselfish act. While there will be many other stories about those who went above and beyond the call of duty in the face of a very pissed off Mother Nature, the work of the Boston Marathon shovel team needs to take its place front and center.
