Year two of the Sonny Dykes era saw the California Golden Bears leap from 1-11 to 5-7. Cal entered the final game of the regular season with a chance to become bowl-eligible, yet fell to BYU in a 42-35 shootout. The Golden Bears averaged 38.2 points per game, but could not overcome a defense that finished 123rd in the nation in scoring defense at 39.8.
With 3,900-yard passer Jared Goff and 1,110-yard rusher Daniel Lasco returning, Cal won’t be lacking for big play potential on the offensive side. The good news about the Golden Bears’ defense is that it lacked seniors in the starting lineup, which means the year of learning under fire will be a positive when spring practice begins. With the bulk of starters returning on both sides of the ball, Dykes’ squad will enter the season confident they can end the program’s four-year bowl drought.
Dykes knows he can’t compete with the Pac-12’s heavy hitters on the recruiting trail, so Cal uses the junior college route more extensively than most in the conference. It’s shaping up well for the Golden Bears, who have been able to pull in a host of juco talent, especially in the secondary, where Cal gave up 366.7 yards per game in 2014.
The Golden Bears won’t have a five-star in its haul, yet the recruiting class of 2015 will bolster the depth Cal already has on its roster.
Cal’s final tally should be a solid group to push the program further away from the 1-11 nightmare of 2013. Follow us here on Wednesday to see how it turns out.
