Nebraska no longer runs the recruiting roost in the Midwest, as the return to dominance of Ohio State — combined with the string of underachieving seasons by the Cornhuskers — have left them as a middle of the pack program in the Big 10. The program also made a course adjustment with the dismissal of coach Bo Pelini and the arrival of Mike Riley from Oregon State.
Riley has done a good job of retaining the talent which verbally committed to Pelini along with adding the caliber of athletes that will fit his pass-first philosophy. While Nebraska lacks the five-star talent that the Big 10’s elite have grabbed, the Huskers are loading up with diamonds in the rough that could eventually evolve into quality contributors.
Finding playmakers on the outside will be the biggest question Nebraska fans face, as the loss of Kenny Bell and Jamal Turner leaves a void that wide receiver Jordan Westerkamp can’t fill alone. It will also be interesting to see if Riley will add a quarterback that fits his style of offense who could perhaps compete with Tommy Armstrong for the starting job.
As National Signing Day arrives, the Huskers have put together a blue-collar class that will surprise many who feel the program may have lost a step or two on the recruiting trail. Don’t be too shocked if Riley pulls at least one swerve that tilts Nebraska among the better classes in the Big 10.
How will it turn out for the Huskers? Only one way to find out. Follow us on Wednesday to see how coach Riley’s first class turns out.
