Colts LB D’Qwell Jackson arrested for assault on pizza driver

Indianapolis Colts star linebacker D’Qwell Jackson was arrested in Washington D.C. on Tuesday night after allegedly assaulting a pizza driver over a parking spot.

D’Qwell Jackson was a huge free agency pickup for the Indianapolis Colts last offseason and stepped up in a big way as a leader of the defense this season. Unfortunately, he has run into some trouble off-the-field already this year.

According to a report from ABC Washington, Jackson was arrested in Washington D.C. on Tuesday night after allegedly punching a pizza delivery boy in the face and the back of the head over a parking spot.

It’s too early to pass judgement on Jackson at this point in time, but this is certainly a troubling story. The Colts have already seen quite a few off-the-field issues with their team, including linebacker Josh McNary being charged with rape. Jackson was thought of as a very calm and mature player this past year, but this story could bring a new light.

During the 2014 season, Jackson ended up with a great statistical season. He racked up 140 tackles, 4.0 sacks, a forced fumble, and four fumble recoveries. Without him on the field, the Colts’ defense would have been much worse than it ended up being.

Indianapolis still has plenty of work to do on the defensive side of the football, but signing Jackson to a four-year, $22 million deal last offseason was a huge step in the right direction.

There have been far too many stories about violence off-the-field from NFL players, and it is a year that will be remembered for those reasons. More information will come out about this situation over the next few weeks, but as of right now it doesn’t look good on the outside looking in.

Assuming this does end up being a fact, the Colts will be faced with a tough decision. Despite Jackson’s talent, do the Colts support him after being convicted of assault? They have cut players in the past for much less, but they can’t afford to lose the presence that Jackson brings to the field.

Jim Irsay and the Colts’ organization are going to have a long chat about what to do following this piece of news. There is always the chance, of course, that Jackson did not actually do what he is accused of doing. Hopefully that will be the case, but if not the Colts may very well have to step in and make a move.
