Further details about D’Qwell Jackson’s apparent attempt to kill a pizza delivery driver are coming out on Thursday after the Colts linebacker was arrested on Tuesday night and charged with simple assault.
The incident happened in Washington D.C. at Jackson’s place of residence, which includes assigned parking spaces. The delivery driver, Jose Bonilla-Fuentes, parked in Jackson’s spot while delivering a pizza. According to a story by CBS Sports, Jackson punched Bonilla-Fuentes in the face and the victim also later said Jackson tried to choke him.
"“What happened is that a crazy guy tried to choke me,” Bonilla-Fuentes said. “He come to me (after the police were called) and say ‘Please, please I’ll give you whatever money you need, but don’t do nothing, don’t let the police take me.”"
The alleged victim told the Kent Sterling show that Jackson became remorseful once the cops got involved. That might have been a good idea for Jackson to try to buy the guy off, but unfortunately, he’s still likely to get put on paid leave, per Pro Football Talk, as the prosecution proceeds. It also gives the pizza guy quite a bit of leverage in getting a sum of money to drop the charges.
The Colts put out a statement about the incident and they do not appear to have made any major decision on Jackson yet.
"“The Indianapolis Colts have been made aware that D’Qwell Jackson was charged yesterday in DC with a count of simple assault,” the team said. “When the Club learns more of the surrounding facts, it will make an appropriate statement.” (via CBS Sports)"
As PFT points out, this coming after the Ray Rice case definitely gives the victim leverage and the NFL shouldn’t be lenient, as assault is assault.
Jackson, unfortunately, is only coming off his first season with the Colts, having signed a $22 million deal for four years last March. His other claim to fame this season was being part of the center of attention on Deflate Gate. His interception during the AFC title game sparked the officials looking into the rest of the footballs used in the game. For Jackson’s part, he denied that he knew anything about the ball being deflated, rather that he wanted the ball back to keep as a souvenir.
