Indianapolis releases disappointing safety LaRon Landy in the middle of his contract

The Indianapolis Colts have released safety LaRon Landry.

Landry was a high-profile free-agent signing for the team two years ago, signing a four-year, $24 million contract, but he has failed to live up to expectations. The safety had two years and $10.5 million left on his contract, and the Colts will save $2.2 million against the cap in this cost cutting move.

Landry played in 11 games this season, but started only six, and also totaled zero interceptions during his time in Indy, meaning he simply wasn’t justifying the cost with his play. If there was a stat for taking pictures of yourself, on the other hand, Landry would have led the league in a landslide.

Landry was suspended for four games this season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. If you’ve ever seen Landry, you had to put on your pretend shocked face when they announced his suspension; in fact, if the NFL said that they used the eye test rather than an official test to suspend him, it would probably still be sufficient grounds for the suspension.

The suspension probably had a lot to do with Landry’s release, which makes sense, since the only players in the NFL on steroids are the ones who fail tests, with zero exceptions.

In related moves today, the team also released Xavier Nixon and Andrew Jackson (not the President), as they prepare for 2015. They must get really disappointed when they look at their roster and realize that Andrew Luck can’t play all of the positions, and when they remember that Trent Richardson is a person (even more so when they remember that he’s a person for whom they traded a first-round pick. The lesson here: the Browns are going to make mistakes. Just let them do it, don’t intervene).
