USMNT drops to No. 31 overall in latest FIFA rankings

The USMNT dropped in the latest FIFA rankings, but there is still time to make up ground and make a bid for the 2018 World Cup.

Soccer is a global sport but it’s not a sport that Americans tend to be very great at. That’s not to say there aren’t high quality soccer players residing in the United States, but the fledgling success of the MLS coupled with the constant failures of the USMNT don’t really do much to cancel out the stereotype.

Count the USMNT dropping in the latest FIFA rankings as yet another example of soccer’s trouble to latch on domestically. Fans get up join arms during major events like the Olympics or the World Cup, but when it comes to the time period in between those events, soccer is something that Americans just don’t latch onto.

The USMNT dropped to No. 31 overall in the latest FIFA world rankings, which isn’t terrible but hardly demonstrates the nation’s knack for always wanting to be the best at everything.

It’s not the end of the world though, as there was no hope of the USMNT rising into the top tier of the FIFA rankings, and falling back to No. 31 doesn’t seem all that bad when considering how down on their luck the squad is. The World Cup run into the elimination rounds sparked some interest in the club and there is still time for the USMNT to rebound and climb back up the rankings.

We are still a ways off from the 2018 World Cup qualifying matches, but there is work that needs to be done for the USMNT if they want to ensure another run at a World Cup and build off their success from this past year. Before we get to the World Cup though, there will be a chance in the 2016 Rio Olympics for the USMNT to bounce back from this fall in the FIFA rankings and make a splash ahead of their next World Cup bid.
