Kevin Durant won the MVP last year, but he thinks players should be the judge for awards

When it comes to MVP voting, the media likes Kevin Durant, but Kevin Durant doesn’t seem to want it that way.

Durant told reporters at the All-Star Game Media Day that he doesn’t think writers should be the ones voting on awards like MVP; he thinks the players would be the best judges of that.

“They have too much power,” Durant said. “The players know each other inside and out. The media isn’t in the film room and goes for sexy names.”

To be fair, the sexy names usually become that way by being really good at basketball; this isn’t the Grammys or anything. And the media certainly isn’t doing a bad job of choosing the MVP: Durant last year, LeBron James the two years prior; does that sound wrong to anybody?

Durant does have a point. The players watch all the other players closely all the time in the film room, so they would be able to spot things that others can’t. But this would open up so many cans of worms: how do you decide which players get a vote? Would players be able to vote for themselves, or their teammates and coaches? There could be players not voting for other players they have grudges with; Nick Young could stuff the ballot box and vote for himself 1,000 times. So much could go wrong; and when it’s fine as it is, why change?

At most, this is something for the TV talking heads to debate for a while, but it’s not really something that has much of a chance of actually happening. Sorry, KD. At least you have that MVP trophy, so you know they like you. And hey, kudos to Durant for saying so even though the media picked him last year. Maybe he thinks it should have gone to Russell Westbrook?
