The sport’s biggest event has slowly been ramping up the festivities, with everything kicking into full force on Sunday afternoon when qualifying for “The Great American Race” begins.
In 2015, there will no longer be single-car qualifying for the Daytona 500.
NASCAR decided to mix things up to a group qualifying format for the race. Since all of that is new, here is how NASCAR explains it will work out:
"For the first time ever DAYTONA 500 Qualifying Presented By Kroger, which traditionally features single-car qualifying, will switch to the group qualifying format to set the front row positions. The results from qualifying will also set the field for the Budweiser Duel At Daytona 150-mile qualifying races on Thursday, Feb. 19. and the results from the Budweiser Duel will finalize the starting lineup for the DAYTONA 500"
During speed runs last week, a handful of notable names like Ryan Newman and Ryan Truex, Jr. had some issues with their cars. Both men had engine issues, but Newman was impacted on a much larger scale as he was forced to switch to his backup car.
We will have to see if the 2015 Sprint Cup runner-up can overcome the obstacle early in his season.
The qualifying will begin Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET, with the availability to watch in the comfort of your own home or on the go with your mobile device. How can you tune in to all of the action? We’ve got you covered.
