The Philadelphia 76ers are active at the NBA trade deadline, and they apparently have their sights set on Minnesota Timberwolves swingman Chase Budinger.

More from Minnesota Timberwolves

The Philadelphia 76ers have been a busy team at the NBA trade deadline, and they don’t appear to be finished. After acquiring JaVale McGee and a first-round pick from the Denver Nuggets, the 76ers appear to have eyes set on the Minnesota Timberwolves and their swingman Chase Budginer.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the 76ers are very much interested in acquiring the services of Chase Budinger but only for the price of draft picks and nothing more. The reason that the 76ers wouldn’t want to surrender much is because they would acquire Budinger only to buy him out.

"The Sixers have interest in acquiring forward Chase Budinger from Minnesota for draft considerations. The Sixers would then buy out Budinger’s deal and allow him to become a free agent."

This seems like an odd strategy but it’s one that many teams employ this time of year. After acquiring JaVale McGee from the Denver Nuggets, the Sixers seem primed to buy him out and move on with the cap space created by the move. That’s what they’d similarly do with Budinger, although while there is some hope they’d keep McGee there is no doubt they’d buyout Budinger in a heartbeat.

It’s a risky move, but it’s one that fits the 76ers mantra of not really caring about traditional ways of winning at basketball and trying to reinvent the wheel. They have tanked in years past for top draft picks and will continue to come in way below the luxury tax with cap space to spare and then-some.

That’s just the way the Sixers operate and while it may seem wise to clear cap space, it’s not that wise to be one of the worst teams in basketball so many years running and still stick with the same bogus strategy.
