C.J. Spiller would rather forget his 2014 season happened, as the Bills running back hit career-lows across the board in what should have been an opportunity to display his wares in what his walk year.
With free agency set to begin in less than two weeks, Spiller will be a sought-after option for teams in search of an all-purpose back who also serves as a dangerous return specialist. The offers will be abundant for Spiller, yet he announced that he is quite open to returning to Buffalo.
“There’s a possibility that I could be in a Bills uniform,” Spiller said during an interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “We never know how this situation is going to play out. The organization knows that I want to be there, so pretty much the ball is in their court.”
While reuniting with the Bills and working under new coach Rex Ryan remains in play, Spiller said he wouldn’t stress too much about the process. One of the things that will be a factor will be how he fits in the offense for a particular team.
“Got to go to a place that fits your style of play,” he said. “You’ve got to be comfortable with the offensive coordinator. You want to have a great quarterback, but only certain teams have that. You want to be in a good situation.”
Spiller will be 28 when next season starts, yet has not had the wear and tear for someone who will enter his sixth season. The injury-riddled 2014 campaign saw him touch the ball just 97 times, giving him a total of only 826 touches from scrimmage.
When healthy, the former first round pick is one of the game’s most explosive runners. While he lacks the carries to officially qualify, Spiller’s career 5.0 yards per attempt would tie him with Adrian Peterson for third among active players (Michael Vick and Jamaal Charles are 1-2). He also has two kickoff returns for touchdowns in his career along with averaging a respectable 7.6 yards per catch.
Spiller added that he would like to be on a Super Bowl contender, something the Bills have not been since their last playoff appearance in 1999. He plans to take a look at how the team approaches free agency, especially if Buffalo upgrades from E.J. Manuel at quarterback.
There will be a host of teams in demand for a game-altering back like Spiller, yet if the Bills make improvements at both quarterback and on the offensive line, he may just with the team he’s called home since they made him the ninth overall pick of the 2010 draft.
