Major League Soccer players are reportedly set to go on strike just two weeks before arguably the most anticipated season in the league’s 20-year history begins.
The new season is set to get underway in under two weeks, but the MLS and the MLS Players Union are locked in deep discussions over terms that the players work under, and the players are prepared to refuse to line out for their clubs if the negotiations fail to see any progress soon.

The MLSPU want players to have the option of becoming free agents and to increase their current salary cap, as reported by Sam Cunningham of Mail Online.
However, despite being in talks for several months, it is understood that both parties are nowhere near an agreement in time for the upcoming season.
It is also a very realistic possibility that if an agreement is not reached by March 6 when the league is set to begin, players could be forced not to play for their clubs.
A tumultuous fortnight lies ahead for the MLS, as one of the most anticipated seasons in the league’s youthful history is shrouded in controversy and turmoil.
Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are expected to join the MLS with New York City FC and LA Galaxy respectively in July, after the current English Premier League campaign finishes in May. However, their arrivals may also be thrown into disarray and suffer setbacks if a compromise is not reached by the two parties.

With Sky Sports having won the rights to exclusively broadcast live MLS games from the US for the first time, this potential strike could not come at a worse time.
With New York City FC and Orlando City SC ready to make their debuts in the MLS on March 8, several high profile signings arriving this season, and the soccer in the US still riding a popularity wave from their team’s impressive performance at the World Cup, the MLS has arrived at a pinnacle period in its short history.
For players, teams and fans alike, hopefully the MLSPU and the MLS reach an agreement in time for the new season.
