Could the Seattle Seahawks pursue DeMarco Murray to replace Marshawn Lynch?

Out of the many teams where DeMarco Murray could potentially land are the NFC divisional champions Seattle Seahawks. This depends entirely on whether or not Marshawn Lynch decides to retire

DeMarco Murray’s time in Dallas may be over. But his career is far from it. The Cowboys may not be willing to pay the NFL offensive player of the year what he deserves, so a divorce is in the works.

While Jerry Jones has expressed his desire to keep Murray aboard, it doesn’t seem likely as he would have to pay a pretty penny for the running back.

One of the places Murray could land is none other than the NFC divisional champions, the Seattle Seahawks.

This would of course only be feasible if Marshawn Lynch were to retire. Lynch has been battling back pain among other discomforts and has eluded to the idea of him retiring after the season concluded. But he has yet to tell the Seahawks anything on his status.

Not many running backs in the league can take the workload Lynch had in the backfield. But if I had to rank the NFL running backs as to who would do the best job in replacing Lynch, DeMarco Murray would probably be near the top.

The biggest risk the Seahawks are taking in signing a player like Murray to such a huge deal is whether or not his body will be able to take the same beating it did last year. The 27 year old carried the ball 392 times last year and he is not getting any younger. If Seattle plans on doing anything long term with Murray, they better lighten his load a bit.

Robert Turbin, the backup running back for the Seahawks took a small amount of touches away from Lynch last year and did fairly well. In 74 attempts Turbin averaged 4.2 yards per carry. If Turbin could increase his carries by 25% while not reducing his production level, this would be a very viable option in reducing the involvement Murray would see on a weekly basis. Just another incentive for Murray to become a Seahawk.

If Murray were to sign a deal with Seattle, that would leave a huge vacancy in the Cowboys lineup. There have been rumors of Adrian Peterson coming to Dallas after being suspended for the majority of the 2014 season and having poor feelings towards the Vikings organization.

While a lot has to happen for both of these top running backs to sign with new teams, the rumors have started to create quite a buzz around where they will end up. Whether it’s money, a fresh start, or a lightened work load that Murray seeks, Seattle might be the best fit moving forward.
