Former Eagles defensive end Trent Cole is in Tampa right now visiting the Bucs, but if he leaves without a deal, the Colts have plans to bring him in for a visit on Monday, according to a tweet from Tampa Bay Times writer Greg Auman. The Colts need pass rushers and they also have good cap room to make moves for one of Cole’s caliber. The Bucs also have plenty of opportunity to keep Cole from visiting the Colts at all if they throw enough money at him.
Cole was just released by the Eagles on Wednesday and has already drawn plenty of interest. Besides the Colts and Bucs, the 49ers and Seahawks have reportedly called about Cole, according to the Sacramento Bee. Teams that could use Cole, but haven’t shown any official interest yet are the Panthers, Falcons, Bengals and Cowboys.
Cole played 10 seasons with the Eagles, his only NFL team, and he recorded 85.5 sacks during that time, which puts him second only to Reggie White on the Eagles all-time list. Cole went to the Pro Bowl twice, in 2007 and 2009, and has only missed five games in his entire career. He also logged 436 tackles in his 10 seasons. In 2014, Cole transitioned from a 4-3 defensive end to a 3-4 outside linebacker. He performed better than expected in the new position. However, he would reportedly prefer to still play 4-3 and hopes to do that at a new team, according to a tweet by Tampa Tribune writer Roy Cummings.
That’s part of why he’s in Tampa, knowing that he can get back to playing in a 4-3 scheme there.
The Eagles were reportedly trying to work out a deal with Cole a few days before they ended up releasing him.
"“We spoke with Trent and his agent and expressed a desire to have him back,” Eagles head coach Chip Kelly said in a statement. “We have been talking for a couple of weeks. Howver, at this point, we think it’s best to let him explore other options around the NFL.” (via NJ.com)"
Even at the 3-4 position, Cole still worked 14.5 sacks over the last two years. He’s not likely to remain a free agent for long.
