That didn’t take too long. Former Ravens receiver Jacoby Jones was cut in February and a week into March, he has a new team in the Chargers. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chargers have agreed to a two-year deal with the 30-year-old wideout. Jones had a difficult 2014 season, muffing two punts and dropping five passes. The Ravens decided to free themselves from his $2.5 million salary and part ways with the former Super Bowl hero. The year before, Baltimore had signed Jones to a four-year deal worth $12 million.
In spite of these issues, Jones was still one of two players to rank in the top 10 of NFL kick returners and punt returners. He was second in kick returns with a 30.6 yard average and returned one kick 108 yards for a touchdown against the Steelers.
Jones struggled to make an impact at the wide receiver position last year, catching only nine passes, the fewest since 2008 for him, and dropping more than half that at five. He quickly lost his position as the No. 3 receiver and never regained it. It was an anti-climactic fall from grace for a receiver who had, just two years prior, helped the Ravens win a Super Bowl. In that game he caught a 56-yard touchdown pass and returned a kick for 108 yards and a touchdown. He also caught a 70-yard touchdown pass to force an overtime situation against the Broncos earlier in that title run.
However, there is probably still some hope from the Chargers that Jones isn’t done yet and can still turn things around. At 30, he should still have a few years left and at the very least, he can still make an impact on special teams, if not as a deep threat.
According to Ian Rapoport, the two year deal is worth $5.5 million over two years.
