Clemson EDGE rusher Vic Beasley spent extensive time with the Atlanta Falcons at February’s NFL Combine and hopes to play for his hometown team.
Vic Beasley is rated by many scouts and analysts as the top pass-rusher in the 2015 NFL draft. Because of that, he could be a perfect fit for his hometown team, the Atlanta Falcons, who select eighth overall on April 30.
Beasley had the opportunity to meet Falcons owner Arthur Blank and other members of the Falcons organization at last month’s NFL Combine. Growing up a Falcons fan he was thrilled.
But it was a new member of the organization, head coach Dan Quinn, who made the most indelible mark on Beasley.
"“Coach Quinn, just his whole demeanor, he’s a very influential coach. He pushes his players. I can tell that just by the way he speaks and the way he carries himself.”"
As a projected top-10 pick, Beasley is obviously excited about the possibility of being selected by the team he grew up rooting for, but he’s sober-minded and understands that may not be what happens, “It’s a high possibility, and that would be like a dream come true. But whatever team I go to, I’m going to be exceptionally happy and treat them like it’s the Falcons, like I grew up rooting for them.”
Beyond the top-10 match, Beasley was able to talk to Quinn about his potential role in Atlanta, which is a fit. “He just said that he had guys like Bruce Irvin and other similar guys to me that could play that Leo position.”
In fact, that was the point where Quinn went from another coach to “a very influential coach”. “That’s kind of where we connected right there. I fit the Leo position because a guy like Bruce Irvin, we’re similar body types. And we have similar games. We’re both great edge rushers.”
Beasley was the star of Clemson’s Pro Day on Thursday, which included in attendance Patriots coach Bill Belichick, new Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan and Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly. Beasley shone after arriving back on the Clemson campus at 7 AM after going home to be at the funeral for his fallen uncle.
Everyone was impressed by Beasley’s character, the Falcons included. He is slated to visit them on March 30. But he doesn’t need to visit the team to know he’d love to be there, “But as far as the Falcons, Dan Quinn is a great guy. I saw him build that defense in Seattle, and I think he plans to do the same in Atlanta.”
