Rory McIlroy dons the cover of March’s edition of Golf Digest in homage to a familiar work of art history.

The cover of March’s edition of Golf Digest features an interesting combination; renaissance era artistry, and contemporary sporting brilliance. That is the happy medium achieved by world number one ranked golfer Rory McIlroy portrayed as Michelangelo’s famous “Statue of David.”

In this issue’s Master’s preview, the magazine will continue its latest trend of baffling cover choices. Last year, the publication infamously elected to feature Paulina Gretzky, daughter of the NHL’s all time leading scorer, in their May 2014 edition.

The selection was questionable at best, as the aforementioned first family in hockey has zero affiliation with the PGA, other than Paulina’s engagement to world number seven Dustin Johnson.

McIlroy, who has been the sport’s brightest young star since 2011, has won four major championships. Most recently, he capped off an unbelievably successful 2014 with a victory at the PGA Championship.

It was his second major victory of the year, after the 2014 Open Championship. He also finished a career best 8th in the Masters last season.

The 26-year-old is portrayed in the photo above as the famous “Statue of David.” A very artsy cover choice, it might leave too little to the imagination for some, however, it remains attention grabbing nevertheless.

It might also prove to be ironic at the point to a certain extent. King David’s victory over Goliath is widely considered history’s greatest underdog hyperbole. After his absolutely dominant 2014 campaign, and emergence into golf’s best player, is it really fitting to symbolize the man as such anymore?

Heck, if Tiger Woods ever regains a semblance of his old form, he might be more fitting of such an underdog moniker. If you do not mind, we will fantasize about a Masters playoff between the two in 2016, after Rory takes home all four major championships in 2015, of course.

This is Rory Mac’s world. We are just simply living in it.
