Browns looked into trade for Larry Fitzgerald

The Cleveland Browns asked about Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald before he redid his contract in Arizona.

The Browns may have all the quarterbacks, but they don’t have much for untroubled receivers. That led them to make inquiries on Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald before he restructured his contract last month, according to a story by Cleveland.com. It was an ill-fated move and probably wouldn’t have worked anyway. Can anyone imagine eight-time Pro Bowler Larry Fitz going to such an unstable quarterback situation?

Didn’t think so.

The Browns weren’t the only team interested in Fitzgerald, but the Cardinals vet ended up restructuring his contract to a more cap-friendly deal and he now has a no-trade clause. The Browns knew they would be without Josh Gordon for the 2015 NFL season, at the very least, and were apparently ready to pay Fitzgerald his pre-restructure $16 million. At least, assuming they didn’t also plan to restructure.

That’s not the only high-profile receiver the Browns have tried for recently. They reportedly were also in talks to get Percy Harvin from Seattle and trade tight end Jordan Cameron. Though, depending on who you talk to, it was the Seahawks approaching the Browns on that one, as they were desperate to unload Harvin.

The Browns haven’t done much in free agency so far, and the longer they remain quiet, the more the pressure builds for them to hit it out of the park in the draft. The Browns have said that they’re looking for the right player at the right price, but isn’t everyone? It’s not clear what that means to the Browns, unless they’re talking about quarterbacks. Can’t have too many quarterbacks.

The Browns are reportedly trying to sign eight-year Chiefs veteran Dwayne Bowe, who was visiting with the team over the weekend. Otherwise, they’ve only signed former Dolphin Brian Hartline at the very start of free agency.

Reports are now coming out that the Browns just signed defensive lineman Randy Starks to a two year deal worth $8 million, according to Ian Rapoport.
