Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay finally spoke about not retaining Reggie Wayne and said they felt it was time.

Reggie Wayne has played 14 seasons for the Indianapolis Colts and after a puzzling decision that angered fans, owner Jim Irsay and the organization decided to not retain Reggie Wayne who has caught 82 touchdowns in his career.

According to the Indy Star, Jim Irsay traveled to Wayne’s home in South Florida a few weeks ago to tell him the tough news in person.

“Him and I had a very long talk, face-to-face, man-to-man,” Irsay said Monday. “It was really hard…I told Reggie I just thought that we felt that it was time.”

Reggie Wayne is part of a great era of Colts players that have retired or left the team after years of service and Irsay said it was hard to see that era go.

"“That era from Peyton (Manning’s) era and Edgerrin (James) and Marvin (Harrison) and Reggie and everyone, it’s hard to let that era go because it was so special. But at the same time, in terms of the direction we thought the team had to go in, it was tough.”"

Reggie Wayne has been a very impressive receiver for the Colts in his 14 years. He had nine seasons where he had over 1,000 yards receiving and had 10 or more touchdowns in three seasons. Wayne missed some time in the last two seasons due to nagging injuries as the 36-year-old wares down. Reggie Wayne is a six-time Pro.

Wayne wasn’t bitter about not being retained, he even wrote a very kind letter to loyal Colts fans.

The veteran wide receiver may still play somewhere else next season instead of retiring, but he’s remaining laid back and letting some time pass before he tries to make a move.
