Fantasy Basketball: Can I Trust Derrick Rose Next Year?
By Dave Fuqua
Can I trust Derrick Rose next year?
I want to say a few disclaimers here. First of all I don’t have any inside information here and secondly I am a Bulls fan. Now if you are still reading this I want to tell you that I will take a very objective stance on Derrick Rose and his value going forward. There are a lot of us here in deep keeper and dynasty leagues that are facing this very question and I want to state some of my thoughts here.

Derrick Rose is a very good basketball player, but Rose is a player that is very dependent on his explosive game and having the ability to blow past his defenders and take the ball to the rim. I don’t want to say that Derrick has lost that ability, but it seemed that even as he was knocking the rust off that some of that explosive game was lacking. Having said that I want to lay another disclaimer out here and say that in all likelihood Derrick may have been playing on that injury for quite some time. If all that is true when you couple that with the fact that Rose is truly pain-free in his rehab attempt there are reasons here to be encouraged whether you are a Bulls fan or someone who catches himself ‘stuck’ with Derrick Rose on your dynasty league team.
I would think that there are basically two camps on Rose and his future in the NBA and that is simply there are believers and non-believers. I would color myself still somewhere in the middle of all that. I believe that Rose will be able to adapt his game, recover and make the best of whatever his body has left in him. However there is only a certain level of investment that I am willing to put into owning Rose in either a keeper or a dynasty league.
If Derrick Rose truly has lost some of his explosiveness then he will really need to amp up his mid-range and three-point shot to be a major force going forward in this league. In the past Derrick Rose has success with his jumper because guys focused on playing him to drive by them and get in to the lane and draw a foul. When it looked like Rose has lost some of that quickness that enabled him to go past defenders his jumper seemed to suffer as guys were able to play him a little more honestly.
As I have said I know that I do not have the answer, but I do think that Rose will be back and he should be in for a solid season for 2015-2016. I am expecting Rose to be back and finish up strong in the playoffs and if that is the case then he should be able to have his first normal off-season in years. Assuming he can finish strong that should give him some momentum and allow the Bulls to gear up and chase the title again next year if they are unable to win it this year which should make for some interesting fantasy news going forward.
So to sum it all up I would be a buyer on Rose in most leagues, but I am buying low and extremely low. If a guy has any belief whatsoever in Rose I am probably not really willing to send an offer that gets accepted, but I would definitely consider throwing most 50-100 rated players for him. If i was going to make a blind guess on where I would have him for the 2015-2016 season I would think around top 50-60 and maybe even higher depending on how much he plays to end this current season. I like Rose and I like his humility and hope he can get back on the court and get back to the MVP level that we saw back a few years ago, but I am not betting the whole farm on it.
