Should I pick up Zach LaVine?

If you are still reading these articles, I want to be the first to say congratulations. You are most likely deep in your playoffs at this point and are looking for that final push to get your team to the goal you had way back in October when you drafted that winning fantasy basketball team. There have been a lot of ups and downs in this season and no doubt we are likely in store for at least one or two more surprises and shocking injuries. We need to be constantly looking to improve our team and make additions that will put us over the top.

There are usually a few pluses and minuses for this point in the season. One of the minuses is that there are not many good players left on the waiver wire, but as a plus there are usually only a few teams who are still active and trying to pick up players. You should be able to get your hands on whoever is out there. Right now Zach LaVine will make for a solid pick up.

In six of his last seven games, LaVine has put up some very good numbers, scoring in double digits. Over the last seven games, LaVine has averaged 17 points, four rebounds, and 4 assists. Needless to say LaVine’s value is tied to Ricky Rubio’s health, but with the ‘Wolves well out of the playoffs, LaVine could very well run the show for the rest of the season as they should be in no hurry to rush Rubio back and could possibly even shut him down for the rest of the season. We could also possibly see the ‘Wolves want to see what they have in LaVine and give him a larger share of the minutes even if Rubio does come back.

We all know that LaVine is extremely athletic and talented, but with LaVine being a rookie you are going to have to deal with a lot of turnovers. As a reward though, LaVine brings a ton of upside and will have nights where he brings the huge numbers. I also like LaVine for dynasty leagues and think he has a bright future in the NBA. Once Ricky Rubio makes a comeback, you can likely drop LaVine from your redraft team, but you might want to wait a game or two to make sure the Timberwolves don’t try to play them both together to continue his development.

I want to encourage you as always to continue to watch the box scores and the minutes that are being handed out at this point in the season as sometimes teams will opt to use these young guys and give them minutes to try and help them along in development for the following season and see how they do in real game situations. Be ready to pounce on anyone who is getting a consistent 30 minutes a game and producing decent numbers.
