Fantasy Baseball: Travis d’Arnaud to DL, Who Can You Pick Up?

facebooktwitterreddit

The players keep dropping like flies early in the 2015 season. On Sunday, the Mets lost pitcher Jerry Blevins to a broken forearm and catcher Travis d’Arnaud to a broken hand in the span of one inning. Vic Black is on a rehab assignment, and will fill in for Blevins when he returns. This has little impact on the fantasy landscape. However, d’Arnaud will be much harder to replace for the Mets and fantasy owners alike.

d’Arnaud had become a standard league option this year. He was hitting .317 with two homers, ten RBI, and five runs scored in 41 at-bats. This is a tough hole to fill from the wire, especially at a notoriously weak position such as catcher. d’Arnaud is expected to be out until at least Memorial Day, so you will need a faily long term replacement. Who is out there on waivers who can fill his shoes? Let’s take a look!

The standard league adds are available in 40-75% of ESPN leagues. The moderate league adds will be players owned in 10-39% of ESPN leagues. The deep league adds will be owned in less than 10% of leagues

  • Standard leagues:

Stephen Vogt, Athletics: Vogt is hitting .368 with three homers, nine RBI, and six runs scored. He usually sits against left-handers, but if he hits like this against righties, you really can’t complain. All catchers get at least one day a week off anyway.

Wilson Ramos, Nationals: Remember him? Ramos hit 16 homers in just 78 games back in 2013, but has battled injuries since. He is healthy now, and is inching his way back to standard league relevance. Ramos is hitting .268 with a homer, eight RBI, and three runs scored. He can be a solid contributor as long as he can stay on the field.

    Moderate leagues:

Caleb Joseph, Orioles: Matt Wieters is supposed to come off the DL sometime in June, which means that Joseph will be valuable until then. Which is how long you need him if you are replacing d’Arnaud. Convenient, huh? Joseph isn’t just a convenience add. He is hitting .375 with a homer, four RBI, and six runs scored. Those numbers are nearly as good as d’Arnaud’s were.

Alex Avila, Tigers: Yes, he is in a platoon situation with James McCann. He is also not lighting it up with a .182 average. But he has scored seven runs, driven in three, and hit a homer. There is a chance that he could get hot at any time, but you hate to carry a guy in a platoon at catcher. Unless you have the roster slots available for both him an Wilin Rosario. That could be an intriguing replacement.

    Deep leagues:

Roberto Perez, Indians: Perez has filled in nicely for Yan Gomes. He has hit .261 with two homers, four RBI, and four runs scored in just 23 at bats. That makes him an interesting add until Gomes comes back, which may not be until June anyway.

Jason Castro, Astros: Castro is hitting .267 with a homer, two RBI, and four runs scored. He could keep his average up there. Last year was really his only down year. Picking him up now could be a bargain if he finds his power stroke once again. He hit 18 homers in 2013.

Kevin Plawecki, Mets: Plawecki is a career .292 hitter in the minors, and has showed some power, hitting 26 homers in 296 minor league games. He will play full time with d’Arnaud out, and has enough upside to take a flier on. He will get a lot of playing time over the next six weeks.
