Fantasy Baseball: Jake Lamb To DL, Who Can Replace Him?

facebooktwitterreddit

The Arizona Diamondbacks have taken a cautious approach and placed third baseman Jake Lamb on the disabled list with a stress reaction in his foot. The team caught it before it became a stress fracture, and he is only supposed to be out for three weeks at the most.

Lamb was a fringe option at best in standard leagues, but if you did have him, you are going to miss his .414 average, nine RBI, a homer, a steal, and four runs scored. He is in a platoon situation at third base, but he saw most of the starts as the left-handed hitting part of the platoon.

He may not be that hard for you standard leaguers to replace, but the rest of us are going to miss the production for the next few weeks. Who are the best options on the wire to replace him? Let’s go scrounging, shall we?

The moderate league options are owned in 10-50% of ESPN leagues. The deep league options are owned in less than 10% of ESPN leagues.

  • Moderate leagues:

Nick Castellanos, Tigers: Castellanos is hitting .295 with a homer, five RBI, and three runs scored. The fact that he is playing every day in a very potent lineup makes him an intriguing option.

Chase Headley, Yankees: Headley is picking up where he left on in the Bronx last year. He is hitting .260 with two homers, seven RBI, and six runs scored. His average may never get back to the .280 range, but if he is scoring and driving in runs like this, is .260 really that bad? Not in moderate sized leagues.

    Deep leagues:

Luis Valbuena, Astros: Where did this come from? Valbuena is not known for his power, yet he has five home runs already this season. That is more than any other third baseman! His average is a little low at .244, and he only has seven RBI, but he could be a good short-term source of power. Ride him while he’s hot. It’s just a bonus if he can keep it up for the entire three weeks that Lamb is out.

Will Middlebrooks, Padres: Being out on the left coast has done good things for Middlebrooks. He is hitting .241 with three homers, 11 RBI (tied for most among third basemen with Alex Rodriguez), seven runs scored, and he has even tossed a steal in there. 2014 was a forgettable year for Middlebrooks. This year he looks right at home in the potent San Diego offense, and can help out owners in all leagues right now.

Yasmany Tomas will take over for Arizona, but judging by how he fared in the minors so far this year, any of these four would probably be better short-term options.
