Look, the Philadelphia Phillies are pretty terrible. Cole Hamels is giving up home runs like they are on sale. Chase Utley is abysmal (it hurt to type that). Ryan Howard has dropped to the seventh spot, which should have happened sooner. When Aaron Harang is your best pitcher, you better hold on, because the season is going to be very long.

As a Phillies fan, it is hard to watch really. But out of the dark nonsense that is Philadelphia fandom, a bright spot has emerged over at the hot corner. Cody Asche. who has been nicknamed Smasche. While the smash factor has not shown up so much yet, he is a gleaming consistent spot for the Phillies.

Third base is deep from Adrian Beltre, to Kyle Seager, Josh Donaldson, and more, but not everyone can have a great third baseman. Early in the season, second-tier options like Josh Harrison and Brett Lawrie have not rocked the boards yet.

In 15 games this year, Cody Asche is slashing .333/.382/.490 with two home runs, four runs, three RBI’s, and four walks. He is no Miguel Cabrera, but Asche’s early season performance is not too bad either. I am not expecting Asche to be a power house or score 100 run, especially not with that offense, but if your team is need of consistency, then Asche could be a nice contributor.

I will stress that it is still early in the season. Usually I do not really start dropping and adding until after three weeks. Asche could wait or he could sit comfortably on your bench. I will also stress that I do not expect Asche to keep up that batting line. I do think he can get on-base consistently, which is something worth looking at.

Overall, Asche would be a great add if you feel like taking a chance or if you are in deeper leagues and need that consistent bat. He would probably be most helpful in NL-only leagues right now.
