Fantasy Baseball: Ben Zobrist To DL, Who Can Replace Him?

facebooktwitterreddit

There were a whole rash of injuries over the weekend. One of the most damaging to your fantasy team was the loss of Ben Zobrist. His stats weren’t particularly great (.240, one homer, one steal, eight RBI, and eight runs scored), but the loss will still be felt in standard leagues with only three bench slots because of his multi-position eligibility.

So not only are you likely looking for a replacement at a relatively shallow position in either second base or shortstop, you likely want one who can play both positions like Zobrist does. This thins the free agent pool a little more.

The standard league replacements are available in 25-70% of ESPN leagues. The moderates are available in 71-90% of ESPN leagues. The deep league options are available in over 90% of ESPN leagues. Since we are replacing a guy like Zobrist, all of these players are eligible at 2B and SS.

Standard Leagues:

Luis Valbuena, Astros: His average hurts (.194), but he does have five homers and seven RBI. He is playing every day, and has flashed some good power. He has never been a great hitter, but his career numbers suggest that he can get up around .250. Better days are likely to come for Valbuena, which makes him worth taking a shot on.

Moderate Leagues:

Brett Lawrie, Athletics: Lawrie has cooled off some since the start of the year, and he has not shown the power that Oakland has hoped, but he has still driven in seven runs and scored five. Let’s face it: if you are looking for guys eligible at more than one position, they are hard to come by.

Deep Leagues:

Alberto Callaspo, Braves: Callaspo has never been much of a power or speed guy, but he is serviceable in deep leagues. He is hitting .261 with a homer, four RBI, and five runs scored while playing every infield position but shortstop. He is one of the few plug and play guys like Zobrist out there, but he has little upside.

Mike Aviles, Indians: He is no longer eligible at SS, but he does have 3B and OF eligibility. Cleveland keeps him in the lineup regularly, and his .242 average won’t hurt much. His RBI opportunities are low at the bottom of the Cleveland lineup right now. He only has one RBI on the year, and he drove in himself.
