Report: Andrew Wiggins to be named NBA Rookie of the Year
Timberwolves are holding a “major” press conference Thursday, presumably to announce Andrew Wiggins as Rookie of the Year
It seems that Minnesota Timberwolves forward Andrew Wiggins is on the verge of being named the NBA’s Rookie of the Year.
Nothing is definite yet, but with Wiggins being the overwhelming favorite for the award, tweets like this have a certain inevitability to them:
Hmm, a “major announcement,” eh? let’s run through the “major announcements” the Timberwolves could be making in late April:
1. Wiggins as Rookie of the Year
2. The team has named Flip Saunders owner and starting center in addition to team president and head coach.
3. Kevin Garnett has bullied Adam Silver into letting him into the playoffs, where he will face the Warriors singlehandedly.
4. The team is moving to South Carolina and will now be known as the Charleston Chew.
When you consider that awards season generally starts around this time of year, it would seem that option number one is the most likely, and we can safely assume that will be tomorrow’s big announcement.
Wiggins, the No. 1 overall pick in last year’s draft and the prize of the Kevin Love trade, proved to be worthy of the hype, scoring 16.9 points per game while appearing in 82 games, making him the only Minnesota player who played more than 49 games for the team.
The Canadian star, known by some as “Maple Jordan,” has some holes in his game, namely a need to improve his shooting percentage and three-point shot. But at his best, he has wowed fans in ways reminiscent of a young Vince Carter. Not many rookies could posterize a 7-footer like Omer Asik this way…
Or make James Harden look this silly…
As some old scout who’s been around the game a long time might say, “the kid’s a natural.”
Now if Minnesota could just get him some real teammates, he could really be something.
The Rookie of the Year award is well deserved, and given the chemistry issues and pending free agency of Kevin Love, the Cavaliers might be the ones regretting that trade before long. Whether or not Love returns to Cleveland, Wiggins seems likely to at least make it one of those great NBA debates people will be having in 30 years.
