The Minnesota Vikings took the road less traveled to the standard number of draft picks in this year’s draft. They, of course, used some of their picks this year to move up into the final pick of last year’s draft to select Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who predictably was the finest of the rookie quarterbacks in his initial season in the NFL.
He figures to be a franchise quarterback, so that move was well worth the cost. This offseason general manager Rick Spielman made another investment in his young signal-caller by making an aggressive move to acquire wide receiver Mike Wallace, who was never a good fit with the Dolphins.
Doing so really only cost him a fifth-round pick this year (and a hefty salary cap hit).
Then there’s the big question hanging over the entire draft league-wide: What’s going to happen with All-Pro running back Adrian Peterson? Can the Vikings move him for potentially another first-round pick? Spielman has historically found ways to get multiple first-round picks.
If he has the leverage or feels the franchise has lost leverage in regards to Peterson himself, it would only make sense that he go that direction once again.
The ideal situation for Minnesota would probably be an impact defender at No. 11, and then finding a way to get back into the first ahead (which would probably mean the Vikings have to give up another pick of their own in rounds two through five) of another team starving for Georgia running back Todd Gurley.
Here are the seven picks the Vikings hold in this weekend’s draft, which begins Thursday evening.
