A couple of days ago, New York Mets GM Sandy Alderson announced that Noah Syndergaard will be called up to the Mets on Tuesday to start against the Cubs. He is pitching for an injured Dillon Gee.

More from Fantasy Baseball

Syndergaard is regarded as the top prospect in the Mets’ system, and possibly the top pitching prospect in all of baseball. If he can live up to the hype, he will add to a Mets rotation that could one day be stellar, fronted by Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler.

This year, while at Triple-A Reno Syndergaard has pitched extremely well with a 1.82 ERA, .94 WHIP, 10.3 K/9, and 2.4 BB/9 in 29.2 innings pitched. It is too bad that his hitting stats cannot count towards his fantasy baseball value because he can hit as well.

Noah Syndergaard’s electric stuff and plus fastball are worth an immediate own because anyone with his velocity and talent could produce instantly.  However, do not assume that he will hit the ground running because Major League Baseball tends to be a tough place for rookies.

There is a lot to like about what Syndergaard is doing in 2015 because a K-BB% is one of the best in-season metrics we currently have to evaluate pitchers off of a small sample size.  His 23% K-BB% is nothing short of excellent in AAA, but he will obviously not maintain that pace against Major League.  If Noah Syndergaard is even remotely close to that mark, then he will be very effective.

While it is never going to be easy to make your Major League debut, I have to like his strikeout potential against the Chicago Cubs.  While Syndergaard obviously has very good K potential, the Cubs swing and miss a lot.  Through 30 games, the Cubs have 305 strikeouts.  While they could do some damage, Syndergaard is almost a surefire bet to rack up a couple of whiffs.

It should be an exciting debut for the Mets’ phenom in a game full of super prospects and young talent.  Start him with caution, but he is a must own in just about any format.
