NBA Draft Rumors: Timberwolves interested in Frank Kaminsky?
By Josh Hill
The NBA Draft is a month away and the Minnesota Timberwolves might be eying a local kid as their first-round pick in Frank Kaminsky.
The NBA Draft is going to determine where the college basketball stars of today end up in the NBA tomorrow. One of the players waiting to hear his name called high in the draft order is Wisconsin center Frank Kaminsky. He made a name for himself in the NCAA Tournament these last two years, leading the Badgers to the Final Four in 2014 and the National Championship game in 2015 — losing both times.
But he appears to be winning big so far in the NBA Draft, as he’s drawing interest very high up in the draft order with a little over a month to go until the draft.
The Minnesota Timberwolves may have a Top 5 pick, but they have interest in Frank Kaminsky anyways and have interviewed him at the NBA Draft Combine.
If the Wolves do go in the direction of Kaminsky with their first round pick, he’d be an interesting choice for a team that is starting to come together with pieces like Andrew Wiggins and Zach LaVine stepping up in their rookie seasons.
Kaminsky would presumably take over for Nikola Pekovic, and he’d also likely be involved in a draft day trade between the Wolves and someone lower in the order. Kaminsky is a lottery pick, but on the fringe of the lottery. Minnesota could end up with the No. 1 pick, and even a Top 3 pick would and them anyone from Karl Anthony-Towns to Kahlil Okafor or D’Angelo Russell.
If the Wolves draft one of those prospects though, they could package him in a deal to acquire Kaminsky and another veteran player from someone who wants one of the top picks in the draft. Landing the No. 1 pick and moving it to land a vet plus Kaminsky could do wonders for the rebuilding process in Minnesota and could fast track the team to winning.
