Much like many other cars last week, James Hinchcliffe was involved in a scary scene Monday, that ended up sending him to the hospital.

Indy 500 practice has been more dangerous than the race itself.

After practice claimed the cars of Hélio Castroneves and others last week, it has claimed yet another victim.

On Monday, during practice before Sunday’s race, James Hinchcliffe was involved in a very serious accident that sent him to the hospital.

Hinchcliffe’s car slid at full speed directly into the wall and then caught on fire. To make matters worse, as the car disintegrated, it slid down the track and briefly flipped over while Hinchcliffe was still in it.

Hinchcliffe was immediately taken to the hospital for emergency surgery as he began bleeding out from his upper thigh.

According to the AP, his leg was pierced by the right front rocker.

"Hinchcliffe’s leg was pierced by the car’s right front rocker and the piece of equipment needed to be removed, according to two people familiar with the crash who spoke on condition of anonymity because IndyCar and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports were not releasing details of the injury. The surgery was also needed to stop massive bleeding."

The good news is that after surgery and the massive blood loss, Hinchcliffe is in stable condition and recovering.

Hinchcliffe is currently 8th in the points standings and is set to begin this Sunday’s race from the 24th position. It is unclear or not whether he will be able to race.
