Teddy Bridgewater wants to emulate Brett Favre
The 2015 Pepsi Rookie of the Year, Teddy Bridgewater, has set some lofty goals on Thursday. During an interview after receiving his ROY award, Bridgewater was asked which quarterback he wanted to emulate with his career. Pioneer Press reported his answer as:
"“If I could be like any other quarterback that played in the National Football League, I would have to say Brett Favre is the guy…Besides the injuries and the hits and everything, he had a pretty successful career. He’s a Hall of Famer for sure, multiple Super Bowls, and that’s something that I look forward to doing.”"
Bridgewater is already off to a good start with 2,919 passing yards and 14 touchdowns in his rookie season.
Favre was known mostly for his individual accomplishments at the quarterback position, becoming the first player to throw 500 touchdown passes. Favre also holds the league record for career passing yards with 71,838. He did appear in two Super Bowls, winning one in 1996 with the Green Bay Packers. His final two years donning the purple and gold were successful and riddled with contact that left many fans wondering which hit was going to be his last in the NFL.
In Bridgewater’s first year he went 6-6 at the helm. It is going to be a long road for both Bridgewater and Minnesota, stuck in a brutal NFC North that features Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford. Yet, with second-year head coach Mike Zimmer running the show, the Vikings look like a good candidate to make a playoff push in 2015.
It seems Bridgewater is focused on not putting on the numbers that Favre did, but rather a drive for multiple championships in Minnesota.
"“Hopefully, I can win more Super Bowls (than Favre)…You play the game to win, and that’s why I’m in Minnesota,” he added. “I want to win championships, and that’s our goal.”"
Bringing Minnesota its first championship would be a fantastic start to putting your name next to ole’ gunslinger. These are some mighty large U-shaped Wranglers to fill, but Bridgewater’s head and heart seems to be in the right place.
