The Los Angeles Kings have some figuring out to do when it comes to their roster, and trading Rudy Gay for Ty Lawson might be in the cards.

When the Sacramento Kings make news these days, it’s typically not good. They were the first team to fire their head coach this season and they’re now in the headlines again for angering their star player with trade rumors which  are causing more chaos than intended.

In all likelihood, the Kings have floated DeMarcus Cousins name on the market to gauge interest but that has now blown up in their faces in the worst of ways. Instead of trading their All-Star center, the Kings might actually be more interested in moving Rudy Gay to acquire pieces that work in George Karl’s system.

According to Chris Broussard of ESPN, George Karl and the Kings want to trade Rudy Gay to the Denver Nuggets for Ty Lawson.

This could ultimately be part of Karl’s end game to rid himself of DeMarcus Cousins. It has been stated that Karl is a fan of Lawson, Kenneth Faried and Wilson Chandler. This all dates back to Karl’s days with the Denver Nuggets and the connections make themselves from there.

Karl is at the forefront of the DeMarcus Cousins rumors, whether that really his doing or not, and rumors that he basically wants to acquire the Nuggets team he had in his final year with the team compounds issues. Still, trading away Rudy Gay is a much more likely outcome to any trade situation that the Kings have before them. He’s not a star, he hasn’t really come into his own since Toronto dumped him on the team and it’s been a failed experiment.

There’s contract issues to worry about and the fact that Karl basically wants to relocate the Nuggets to Sacramento. But if there’s any member of the team traded before or during the draft — and even after — it’s going to be Gay and not Cousins.

At least, that’s what makes the most sense.
