Tennessee Titans 2015 Season Preview

The Titans finished last season with a 2-14 record while placing 4th in the AFC South Division. The Titans don’t appear to have any studs in fantasy this season, but they do have some players that will come at a value in your draft that could contribute to your roster. They may finish the season at the bottom of their division again, but if you can hit on a couple of their players late in your draft, you might not finish in the bottom of your league.

Quarterback

Marcus Mariota

The Titans selected Mariota 2nd overall in this year’s draft. Mariota is going to be the Titans starting quarterback this year as a rookie, and he is a player you might want to have tempered expectations. Mariota is going to be a decent stream this season due to his rushing ability, but I don’t suggest drafting him, because the odds of him being a reliable starter are very low.

Running Back

Bishop Sankey

Sankey finished last season ranked 47th among running backs in fantasy points with 97.70 averaging 6.11 points per game. Sankey had 3 games where he scored 10 or more fantasy points. A lot of people are down on Sankey because he didn’t produce last season, but I’m cutting him a little bit of slack because he was a rookie. Also, after re-watching some of his games, he doesn’t look as bad as what his statistics say. Sankey is going late in drafts (ESPN ADP 109.2), which is very cheap. There’s a good chance that Sankey is going to be the main back in that offense. There’s a chance that he develops a little and becomes a solid RB2. He is quick and he’s very good at catching the ball; not to mention Mariota adds an extra dimension with his rushing ability, which could open things up for the run game. You’re only out an 8-9th round pick if he busts. I’ve bought a lot of stock in Sankey this offseason due to his price.

David Cobb

Cobb was selected in the 5th round of the NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. A lot of people are penciling Cobb in as the starter for the offense. I believe he has a chance to win the job, but I think it’s going to be harder for him then what some would think. Cobb is a plodder, and he is very similar to Shonn Greene. I expect that Cobb would need a lot of touches to be fantasy relevant and he would have to get a considerable amount of work around the goal line to crack your starting lineup. Anything is possible, but it’s going to be tough for him to get a considerable amount of touches when he’s competing with Sankey. He typically goes a round later than Sankey, so if you wanted to roster both players then I wouldn’t be against it.

Wide Receiver

Dorial Green-Beckham

The Titans drafted him in the 2nd round of this year’s draft, and he’s going to be an intriguing prospect this year. I don’t suggest drafting him, but I would add him to your watch list and monitor his targets during the first couple weeks. If he’s getting a considerable amount of targets then you might want to pluck him off waivers and stash him just in case, because he is very talented.

Kendall Wright

Wright finished last season ranked 42nd in fantasy points with 171.65 averaging 12.26 points per game. Wright had 7 games last year where he scored 10 fantasy points or more, and 2 games where he scored 20 fantasy points or more. Wright will provide solid depth on the bench of your fantasy team, and will be a trendy start as a flex option during favorable matchups. Wright will carry more value in PPR leagues than standard because he’s going to be running a lot of underneath routes where he’s likely going to be targeted by Mariota.

Justin Hunter

Hunter finished last season ranked 78th among wide receivers scoring 98.80 fantasy points while averaging 8.23 fantasy points per game. Hunter is a very risky player. He has tons upside, but will he put it together this season? My guess is that he’s not going to be fantasy relevant this year. The volume isn’t going to be there, and he hasn’t been developing to his potential.

Hakeem Nicks

The Titans signed Nicks in the offseason, which is very interesting. There’s a chance that he could beat out Hunter for his job. Even if he does beat out Hunter, I’m still not drafting him. The passing volume of the offense is too low for me to want to invest any serious capital in Nicks. I will monitor his targets during the first couple weeks of the season before I decide whether or not to pick him up off waivers.

Harry Douglas

The Titans signed him during the offseason. I view him similarly to Nicks. I’m only putting him on my watch list and I’m monitoring the usage of this offense before I make any moves.

Tight End

Delanie Walker

Walker finished last season ranked 8th among tight ends in fantasy scoring with 177.50 points while averaging 11.83 fantasy points per game. Walker had 6 games where he scored 10 fantasy points or more, and he had 4 games where he scored 20 fantasy points or more. Despite having a good season last season Walker is going late in drafts (ESPN ADP 133.5). If you like taking your tight ends late, then Walker is going to be a candidate for you, and he’s going to be a solid streaming option this season. Rookie QBs tend to throw more to the tight end because they are quick easy reads that they can hit for a high percentage completion. I like Walker, I don’t think he’s going to be a stud, but love the value in which you are getting him in drafts versus the production that you are going to get out of him.

Defense/Special Teams

Titans defense finished last season ranked 29th in the league in fantasy production with 52 fantasy points on the year. (ESPN Standard) The Titans had 2 games where they scored 10 fantasy points or more. Don’t draft their defense it’s not going to get much better this year. There is a good chance they are going to be on the field a lot due to the offense not being able to move the chains. The odds of them being fantasy relevant are very low. I wouldn’t trust streaming them this season unless they are facing a 3rd string quarterback.
