Kevin Durant is going to dominate free agency headlines heading into next summer, and the Golden State Warriors want in on the race to sign him.

This summer has been filled with plenty of free agency drama with names like Kevin Love, Dwyane Wade and DeAndre Jordan hitting the market. But that’s nothing compared to the bonanza that will ensue if Kevin Durant escapes the Oklahoma City Thunder and hits the open market.

Durant has already been rumored to be going to teams like the Nets, Wizards or Mavericks but there’s a dark horse entering the race that could change the game.

According to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News, the Warriors are hoping to get in on the Kevin Durant sweepstakes in 2016 and land him when he’s available next summer.

This is assuming the Thunder don’t find a way to re-sign him this year and avoid the whole frenzy that will ensue of Durant even comes close to sniffing free agency. Durant is already considered to be too close to the open market for comfort and that’s with a year left on his current deal.

Golden State isn’t the first team you think of when it comes to where Durant will land — in fact, they’re not even in the top five. That doesn’t mean they don’t make a decent destination for him though. A sign-and-trade needed to land Durant would almost certainly involve Klay Thompson heading to the Thunder, but upgraded Thompson with Durant is a no-brainer.

Splitting up the Splash Brothers will be tough, but an extended relative like Durant coming in to play the role of step-brother isn’t the worst option in the world and could be something that both makes the Warriors a dynasty and finally gets Durant a ring.
