There are only three afternoon games on tap for today, which limits our possibilities for those of us that chase past stats. There are still a few that could net us some good results this afternoon. Let’s take a look!

NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science.

Pitcher:
Best Bet:
Jeff Samardzija, White Sox ($8,700): Samardzija has held the current Blue Jays roster to a .238 average with two homers and only four RBI in 80 at bats. He only has 11 strikeouts which limits his upside, but he is facing R.A. Dickey. The same R.A. Dickey that has given up eight home runs in 115 at bats to Chicago’s roster in his career.

Honorable Mention:
Yordano Ventura, Royals ($8,200): I am always a bit apprehensive about using pitchers that are fresh off of a DL stint, but there aren’t many other options. Also, Ventura has held the Rays to a .233 average with a homer and four RBI in 30 at bats. That one home run was a grand slam, so one player accounted for all of the damage. Stay tuned to find out who it is, as he will be recommended for today!
Stay Away:
R.A. Dickey, Blue Jays ($7,400): Dickey has held the Pale Hose to a .235 average in 115 at bats, but he has given up eight homers and 18 RBI. That makes him a very risky proposition, especially when you consider he is facing Samardzija, who the stats say is today’s best bet.

First Base:
Best Bet:
Jose Abreu, White Sox ($3,500): Abreu should be in everyone’s lineup tomorrow. He is 3 for 6 off of R.A. Dickey. All three of the hits are home runs, and he has driven in five. The potential for another big day is clear here.
Honorable Mention:
Mark Teixeira, Yankees ($3,300): Tex is plan B for those of you that want to save a little cash, but honestly, it isn’t worth it. Tex is 3 for 12 with a double and a walk off of Jesse Chavez, but he has no other counting stats. He may get a point or two, but he has nowhere near the potential of Abreu.

Third Base:
Best Bet:
Chase Headley, Yankees ($2,600): Headley is 2 for 5 with a walk and a solo home run off of Jesse Chavez. Chasing home runs is not a bad idea on days like this with a small player pool to choose from.
Honorable Mention:
Evan Longoria, Rays ($2,800): Longoria is 1 for 4 with a walk against Yordano Ventura. That is good enough to get him second billing at third base.

Second Base:
Stephen Drew, Yankees ($2,200): Drew is the only second baseman this afternoon that has recorded a hit against today’s opposing pitcher. He is still only 1 for 7 off of Chavez, but that one hit is a home run. If you are looking for past stats, Drew is the only one that has any measurable ones.

Shortstop:
Best Bet:
Alexei Ramirez, White Sox ($2,300): Ramirez is 5 for 13 with two walks, a double, two homers, and five RBI off of R.A. Dickey. You aren’t going to find much better than that tomorrow.
Honorable Mention:
Jose Reyes, Blue Jays ($3,400): Reyes is only 4 for 15 (.267) off of Samardzija, but he has two walks, a double, and a solo home run. And he still has good enough speed to swipe a base or two. If you have the extra capital, he might be worth a flier.

Jun 20, 2015; Cleveland, OH, USA; Tampa Bay Rays center fielder Kevin Kiermaier (39) rounds the bases en route to a triple during the eighth inning against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field. Mandatory Credit: Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports
Catcher:
Best Bet:
Russell Martin, Blue Jays ($3,200): Martin is 7 for 22 (.318) with two walks, three doubles, and a RBI off of Samardzija from their days in the National League. He has the best track record at catcher tomorrow afternoon.
Honorable Mention:
Stephen Vogt, Athletics ($3,100): Vogt is 1 for 2 with a single off of Masahiro Tanaka. Yes, that makes him the best plan B.

Outfield:
Best Bets:
Jacoby Ellsbury, Yankees ($4,100): Ellsbury is back, and the Yankees need him. Especially his 2 for 6 with a three run homer line off of Jesse Chavez. Heck, Tananka may be worth using if you have the money since the Yankees have a good history against Jesse Chavez.
Kevin Kiermaier, Rays ($2,500): Kiermaier is a perfect two for two with a grand slam off of Yordano Ventura. If you are going to use any Rays player today, it should be Kiermaier.
Melky Cabrera, White Sox ($2,700): Melky is 5 for 15 with a triple, a homer, and three RBI off of R.A. Dickey. He is well worth using as one of your four White Sox players in your lineup tomorrow afternoon.
