One of the biggest wrongs in college sports lately has been righted with the announcement of the UAB Football return
Last year many college football fans were left scratching their heads when it was announced that the UAB Blazers football program would be shutting down at the end of the season. The school administration chalked it up to budget concerns and what not, but we all knew in our heart of hearts that it was a built-in, lame excuse.
Well, for those of us that would have missed dearly seeing the Blazers step onto the football field, the hurt will not last that long. On Tuesday, the school announced that the football program will be making its return in the 2017 season. So basically, in the end, the school placed itself on an unnecessary two-season death penalty.

Furthermore, in what could be classified as just as good of news, when they do get back on the field, they will return to their status as an FBS program and will be eligible for postseason play.
NCAA indicates to UAB it will be classified as FBS program & eligible to play in bowl, if qualifies, in 1st year back

With the circumstances that were put in place, there was a possibility that they wouldn’t be returned to the FBS level, but thankfully they can pick up right where they left off. It’s not as if this wasn’t a program that was terrible by any means. Last year they finished 6-6 on the year, which made them eligible for bowl contention. With the returning players they would have had this season, there was a chance they could have put together an even better campaign and made their way to a more prominent bowl on the list.
It’s sad that this all had to even happen in the first place, but thankfully cooler and smarter heads ended up prevailing in the end and UAB can get back to the gridiron soon.
