Fantasy Baseball: Impact Of Shane Victorino Trade To Angels

facebooktwitterreddit

The Los Angeles/Anaheim/California Angels made another minor move on Monday to shore up their team for a playoff run. They acquired veteran outfielder Shane Victorino from the Red Sox. Victorino was one of the integral parts of Boston’s World Series title in 2013. The Angels are hoping that he can do more of the same for them.

The trade looks like this:

The Sox are picking up $3.8 million dollars of Victorino’s contract in this deal. This is one of the few deadline deals that doesn’t see prospects flying around. Rutledge has shown some power when he has been able to make it on the field. Rutledge hit 19 home runs in 266 games with the Rockies before being dealt to the Angels in the offseason. He has not played in the majors yet this year.

The 34 year old Victorino was hitting .245 with one home run, four RBI, and five stolen bases in just 106 at bats. Victorino spent much of the season on the disabled list, but played in both games of a doubleheader when the Angels were in town last week. That was likely no accident. Victorino is likely to battle Matt Joyce for at bats in the outfield, and if he contributes, could find himself an everyday fixture in the lineup for the Angels. If that happens, he will be of interest to those of you in mixed leagues that need runs or steals.

Josh Rutledge could find himself in the majors right away with Dustin Pedroia on the disabled list. Brock Holt has been playing second base lately, but Rutledge is a natural second baseman. Holt is like likely better at third base or in the outfield. If Rutledge is in Boston, he will be of interest to you deep leaguers in need of power or a healthy body at second base.

The loser of this deal fantasy wise is Matt Joyce. At worse, he probably finds himself in a strict platoon, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Victorino took over right field outright. Keep an eye on this situation.

  • The big winner in this deal is Cuban import Rusney Castillo. He was sent back to the minors when Victorino was activated. Now he is back for his second go in the majors with an avenue to playing time in right field his for the taking. Assuming of course that Brock Holt stays at second base. Castillo was hitting .230 with one homer, one steal, and six RBI in 26 games with the Sox earlier this season. He has a .282 average with three homers, ten steals, and 17 RBI in 40 games for AAA Pawtucket this year.

Castillo may be of interest to those of you in mixed leagues. He batted seventh on Tuesday night after Victorino was pulled to pack his bags, but there is a chance that he could bat near the top of the order if he can hit for average. That would make him a good source of runs and steals as well, with more power upside than Victorino. If Castillo is available in your standard league, and you have a struggling fringe player on your bench, it could pay off to pick him up. Especially if you need steals.
