The main attraction was at Big Ten Media Days on Friday and, sadly, there weren’t too many fireworks from Jim Harbaugh. He didn’t go suns out guns out. Nor did he challenge any media members to a pushup contest. Harbaugh’s time behind the podium was, oddly, subdued.
If there was any highlight from the session, it would have to be when, while talking about his former coach Mike Ditka, Harbaugh whipped out an Iron Mike jersey from nowhere. In fact it might have been the slickest humblebrag of the entire day. Oh you know, Harbaugh was just hanging out at Mike Ditka’s Restaurant on the Mag Mile and, after spending a lovely evening with the joint’s namesake, decided to scoop a new jersey. Yawn. No big deal.
The best part is that Harbaugh brought the jersey with him to the podium and still waited for a follow-up question about Ditka to show it off. He didn’t showcase the thing when first mentioning the legend, but rather waited patiently for the press to walk into his spiderweb before whipping out his newest non-turtleneck garb. Well played. Sadly the media really missed an opportunity to ask Harbaugh the age-old koan of who would win in a fight: Ditka or Hurricane Ditka?
Other highlights from Harbaugh’s time at the podium include his refusal to get in the mind game gutter with Urban Meyer (Ohio State is “Ohio State,” not “that school down south”) and his telling of a Woody Hayes story. Yes, the Michigan Man told a Woody Hayes story. When you think he’s gonna zig, he zags.
