2015 Trade Deadline: Will Abraham Almonte Be A Fantasy Factor?

Many experts expected the San Diego Padres to own the day on Friday. According to reports, they were willing to sell off anything that wasn’t bolted down, including but not limited to Justin Upton, Craig Kimbrel, James Shields, Tyson Ross, and Jedd Gyorko. When the dust cleared, they had moved…..Abraham Almonte? Such is the madness of the trade deadline.

The Padres resisted the temptation to move Ross to the Cubs for a deal involving Starlin Castro, and resisted moving Craig Kimbrel for prospects. Instead, they moved a prospect of their own to bring in a bullpen arm in Marc Rzepczynski. Word around the industry is that the Padres secretly still thought they were still in contention, and this move confirms that. That they were never really sellers in the first place.

Here is how the deal went down:

Rzepczynski is 2-3 with a 4.43 ERA this year, but he provides a much needed left handed arm out of the bullpen. He is also heading to the pitching haven known as Petco Park, and could provide a spark if you are in a league that counts holds.

Almonte was hitting just .204 with four RBI in 31 games for the Padres in a reserve role. Cleveland decided that they would rather the 26 year old Almonte get regular at bats for AAA Columbus than sit on the big league bench. Almonte hit .275 with four homers, 35 RBI, and 11 steals in the minors.

Cleveland sent away outfielders David Murphy and Brandon Moss at the deadline, so they have room for Almonte in the outfield should he succeed at AAA. If he can get back to the majors, he could be a solid addition, and could provide some speed for those of you in deeper leagues.
