2015 Trade Deadline: Will Felix Doubront Become Relevant In Oakland?

Right at the deadline buzzer, the Oakland Athletics picked up pitcher Felix Doubront from the Toronto Blue Jays. Doubront was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays when they picked up David Price.

The A’s gave up an undisclosed amount of cash for Doubront. The Blue Jays can certainly use the cash to help pay for Price and Troy Tulowitzki. They really didn’t need Doubront anymore.

Doubront was 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA in five appearances (four starts) for the Blue Jays. He was 1-3 with a 2.44 ERA at AAA Buffalo in nine starts there. He figures to be placed in the Oakland rotation to replace the departed Scott Kazmir.

Those plans could be derailed after the start by Aaron Brooks on Saturday night. Brooks gave up just one run in 7.1 innings in a win over Cleveland taking up Kazmir’s first turn in the rotation.

  • Doubront has flashed potential several times in the minor leagues, but he just hasn’t been able to put it together for any period of time in the majors. He is 29-24 with a 4.78 ERA in 107 career appearances (77 starts).

Despite moving to a much bigger park in Oakland, Doubront has struggled in three starts in Oakland in his career. He has compiled a 7.30 ERA in 12.1 innings pitched, but was fortunate to only lose one of those games.

He is the latest reclamation project of Billy Beane. The A’s didn’t have to give up anything to get him, so this is a very low-risk proposition for Oakland. He could end up that way for you as well in deeper leagues.

If Doubront does wind up pitching out of the bullpen, he could maximize his strikeout potential with short bursts at a time. He has 399 career strikeouts in 461 innings pitched. He could increase that ratio if given a chance. The A’s are going nowhere fast, so Doubront could have a long leash. This could be his last chance, so he has all the motivation that he can handle to succeed.

Doubront will likely not be a standard league option, but those of you in deeper leagues need to keep an eye on this situation. He could become a decent source of strikeouts down the stretch. Let’s just hope he doesn’t kill your ERA.
