10 best MLB waiver trades since 2000
MLB waiver trades provide teams with one final chance to improve themselves before the race to the postseason. Here is a look at the 10 best deals since 2000.
The 2015 season recently saw a flurry of deals involving high-profile players being shipped away before the July 31st MLB trade deadline.
The Toronto Blue Jays went all-in and acquired Cy Young Award-winner David Price, along with talented shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and promising outfielder Ben Revere. The Houston Astros acquired two All-Stars in Carlos Gomez and Scott Kazmir, and, in the process, have turned a one-game deficit into a four-game lead in the American League West. There were also the Kansas City Royals, who traded for Cincinnati Reds ace Johnny Cueto and utility player Ben Zobrist in an attempt to return to the World Series for a second consecutive year.
As if that were not enough, the Los Angeles Dodgers orchestrated a three-team, 13-player deal that landed Miami Marlins starter Mat Latos in an effort to shore up an uncertain pitching rotation.
There is no doubt that some of these moves, along with several others, will have major postseason implications. Just because the MLB trade deadline has come and gone, however, does not mean that contenders have stopped looking for ways to improve over the final stretch of the regular season.
MLB waiver trades provide teams who were not among the winners at the July 31st deadline one final chance to bolster their playoff odds. Whether it is acquiring a seasoned veteran with a little left in the tank, taking a chance on a young prospect, or simply finalizing a deal that could not be materialized by the MLB trade deadline, waiver trades provide a great opportunity for teams to improve themselves for both the present and the future.
