On Sunday, the Toronto Blue Jays continued to gain ground in the America League East by completing their sweep of the New York Yankees. Perhaps the key point of the game was when Jose Bautista went yard, launching a bomb into the left field bleachers.

Apparently, the Yankees fan who caught the ball was not overly thrilled about having a memento delivered to him, throwing it back onto the field with gusto. It turns out this would be an unfortunate decision for Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, who takes the ball right in the numbers, per Blue Jays Plus.

This adds injury to insult, for a team that is suddenly coming apart at the seams. Only a few weeks ago, it looked like New York was going to cruise into the playoffs with the AL East title in hand. Now, after the Blue Jays traded for shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and starting pitcher David Price, Toronto is on an eight-game winning streak and only 1.5 games back.

Luckily for both the fan and the Yankees, Gardner was not hurt and continued to play. The left fielder has been the spark plug throughout the season for New York, hitting .285 with 11 home runs and 49 RBI. Gardner has also provided his trademark speed, swiping 15 bases in 2015.
