NFL 2015: Ranking each defense from 32-1
29. New York Giants
The Giants have hope of making the playoffs for the first time since 2011, but it is not because of a great defense. New York had a defense which ranked 29th overall last season, showcasing a wide variety of problems throughout all three levels. Things don’t promise to get much better this year, especially with Jason Pierre-Paul’s status up in the air after his unfortunate fireworks incident.
Up front, the entire pass-rush rotates around Pierre-Paul. The defensive end is yet to report to camp while he mulls over his franchise tag options, all while recovering from an amputated right index finger. If Pierre-Paul can get used to playing with nine fingers is a real concern. Another real concern are the players starting at linebacker, with the oft-injured Jon Beason in the middle.
Along with Beason are Jameel McClain, J.T. Thomas, Mark Herzlich and Devon Kennard, it could be a tough time for New York in the middle. The secondary is also with plenty of questions. Second-round rookie Landon Collins projects to be a star but is replacing long-time veteran Antrel Rolle at safety, complimented by Nat Berhe. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is a good player, but far from elite.
