Josh Gordon hit Twitter to respond to a bogus DWI report made about him on Monday.

On Monday morning, one slipped past the goalie for Atlanta news station 11 Alive. The station erroneously tweeted that embattled Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon was arrested for a DWI.

Gordon was not arrested, and 11 Alive’s link was to a story from 2014. The station later tweeted a retraction citing that the misfire was due to site maintenance.

11 Alive also amended the story on its website to emphatically state that the news was not recent.

Alas, the damage was already done. For somebody like Gordon, who has had enough run-ins with the law or NFL’s front offices that anything seems possible, his name immediately started trending online. Eventually the clamor was so loud that Gordon was forced to issue a statement.

Gordon was suspended for the entire 2015 season after testing positive for alcohol in February. The wide receiver was on a private plane to Las Vegas, during which time he self-admittedly drank two beers. Due to a previous violation of the league’s substance abuse policy, any positive tests, whether in-season or not, would result in automatic suspension.

"On Jan. 2 of this year, just days after our season ended earlier than we all had hoped — and yes, my actions during the prior offseason definitely contributed to our failure to make the playoffs; it killed me seeing our guys fight so hard when I wasn’t out there with them — I boarded a private flight to Las Vegas with several teammates. During the flight, I had two beers and two drinks. It was the first time I had consumed so much as a drop of alcohol since July 4, 2014, the day of the DWI."

Gordon missed the first 10 games of the 2014 season and was suspended by the team for the season finale. In five games he notched 24 receptions for 303 yards on 47 targets, with no touchdowns.
