Another day, another controversy surrounding UCLA football and the son of a prominent rap musician.

UCLA Bruins freshman wide receiver Cordell Broadus, the son of legendary rapper Snoop Dogg, has quit the football program, UCLA head coach Jim Mora announced on Friday. The story was first reported by Tracy Pierson at Scout.com.

In a brief statement posted on the school’s website, Mora said that Broadus, who was a four-star prospect at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, is an “amazing young man” who has simply decided to pursue other passions — specifically film — outside of football:

"Cordell informed me yesterday that he has decided to pursue other passions in his life – in particular his love of film through his company Film School Productions. Cordell is an amazing young man with many talents, and we wish him nothing but the best as he continues to pursue his degree at UCLA."

While we will have to wait and see how this affects the Bruins on the field, the loss of a talented player such Broadus could be a tough pill to swallow for UCLA fans. Broadus was not someone who was recruited to play football simply because of his famous, beloved father: he put up solid numbers while at Bishop Gorman and drew serious interest from the likes of Arizona State and USC. Cordell Broadus was ranked in ESPN’s Top-300 recruits before signing with UCLA and was considered the 14th best receiver in the class.

With Broadus now off the team, that leaves the UCLA football program with just one child of a hip hop superstar: Justin Combs, whose father, rapper/producer/mogul P. Diddy, was involved in an altercation with one of the team’s strength and conditioning coaches earlier this year. In that instance Diddy, who was attending a UCLA practice, overheard the strength and condition coach screaming at Justin, who plays defensive back. According to the report by TMZ, Diddy confronted the coach and swung a kettle bell — Diddy insists he did this in self-defense — which could have caused serious damage. The rap legend was then arrested and charged with assault. However, his son remains on the team.
