Lions vs Redskins final score: RGIII goes down with injury in Washington win
By Jack Crosby
The Washington Redskins were successful in their second preseason outing on Thursday night, but Robert Griffin III went down with another injury
Thursday night inside FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, the Washington Redskins welcomed in the Detroit Lions for NFL preseason action. Ultimately, by the time it was all said and done, the Redskins were able to come away with the 21-17 win — but not without a price. Early on in this one, after being banged up quite a bit, Robert Griffin III was forced to leave the game after trying to recover a fumble. It was reported at the time that Griffin was being evaluated for a potential concussion and a stinger.
The Lions were able to jump out to a 10-0 lead in this one early in the second quarter following a touchdown pass from Dan Orlovsky to Jeremy Ross. However, the Redskins would fight back to take a 14-10 lead following a Reggie Ball touchdown catch from Colt McCoy. While the Lions would regain the lead, Washington went up for good in this one after Kirk Cousins found Rashad Ross for a four-yard score.
Still, though, the news coming out of this one is that while the Redskins were able to get the victory to move to 2-0 in the preseason, there are once again questions about the health of RGIII.
Three Stars of the Game
1) Colt McCoy
With there being a lot of questions surrounding that health of RGIII now once again, the focus on Washington will be on the backups. After Griffin went down, it was McCoy that came in to take over and he ran the offense well. By the time his night was over, he’d finished 5-of-6 for 80 yards and a touchdown pass.
2) Kirk Cousins
Look, when Jay Gruden is the head coach of your team, then quarterback play is highly important. At the time of this posting, it’s still not clear how much time Griffin might miss, if any at all, so it was crucial that both McCoy and Cousins performed impressively. Well, much like McCoy coming in for Griffin, Cousins came in and put in his work, finishing this win with 91 yards on 8-of-12 passing and also a touchdown.
Here we are once again, with a majority of the focus on the Redskins’ backup quarterbacks. The more things change…
3) Zach Zenner
The rookie running back for the Lions didn’t necessarily light the world on fire, but he showed the versatility that we’ve seen is needed to be successful in this Detroit offense. Rushing out of the backfield, Zenner finished with 22 yards on four carries. But, receiving wise, Zenner hauled in five balls for 59 yards and a touchdown. This young man out of South Dakota State could prove to be valuable for this team at some point.
Injuries
Of course, as stated above, the big news coming from Thursday night was the injury to Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III. After hoping that he could stay healthy and possibly return to his 2012 self, this setback occurred on Thursday night and there’s no telling where things go from here.
Again, the backup quarterback position for the Redskins is the most-watched position group with McCoy and Cousins potentially now playing to be the starter.
Betting Odds
Coming into this one on Thursday night, the Redskins were -2.5 point favorites, so everything worked out in that department as well.
Next Week
Now as for where these two teams go from here. The Redskins will now move on to take on the Baltimore Ravens on the road Saturday night, while the Lions will face the Jacksonville Jaguars, also on the road.
