Western Michigan walk-on Trevor Sweeney is a hard worker. The Broncos aren’t exactly considered an elite program, but for a MAC school, they are expected to have a solid season and they have the perfect opportunity to show what they’re made of in a season-opening game against Michigan State.

Sweeney, a special teams stud, has worked his tail off to make sure he appears in that season opener, ready to give it his all. It’s special teams heroes like him who help teams really succeed without getting much recognition.
However, on Thursday afternoon, Trevor is receiving a ton of national attention. No, he didn’t make an incredible play in practice that you have to see, but he did recover an onside kick that will change his life forever.
Western Michigan head coach P.J. Fleck surprised the junior walk-on with a full-ride scholarship for his hard work and tireless effort to make everyone better.
Just watch at the touching moment during practice and try to fight back your emotions.
The Academic All-MAC junior has appeared in 19 career games since walking on in 2013 — last year playing in all 13 on special teams. He has recorded 16 career tackles and now one onside kick recovery that will likely be the most memorable football moment of his young life.
It’s always cool to see scholarships awarded in surprising ways, but I don’t think there has been a more creative one than this as the walk-on scrambled for what he thought was a loose ball, but turned out to be his future.
Cool stuff right here.
