The Detroit Lions have added another weapon for starting quarterback Matthew Stafford on Monday as the team has reportedly acquired tight end Tim Wright from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network was the first to report the trade.
After a rookie season in 2013 that saw him haul in 54 receptions for a total of 571 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns with the Buccaneers, the New England Patriots saw enough potential in the undrafted tight end to trade veteran offensive lineman Logan Mankins to the Buccaneers for Wright in August of 2014.
With the Patriots in 2014, Wright totaled 259 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns on 26 receptions.
While Wright did win a Super Bowl with the Patriots last season, his new opportunity with the Lions may be the best of his career.
In fact, Wright could be an insurance policy for the Lions’ offense if 2014 first round pick Eric Ebron fails to to live up to expectations. Ebron was selected by the Lions with the 10th overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft and had a disappointing rookie season, recording only 248 receiving yards and 1 touchdown on 25 receptions.
With Ebron appearing to be a bust, Wright could be a sleeper candidate primed to have a breakout season in 2015.
