Who is the Florida Gators’ starting quarterback for 2015?
By Jack Crosby
As they get set to begin the era under offensive guru Jim McElwain, who has been tabbed as the starting quarterback for the Florida Gators?
The Florida Gators, who have most certainly seen some better days over the course of the past few seasons, are getting ready to begin their new era under head coach Jim McElwain. That era will get kicked off this Saturday when he and his Gators team take on New Mexico State. However, there has been one slight problem as the season draws near here in 2015 — Who will the starting quarterback be.
Yes, throughout the entirety of the summer, the Gators coaching staff and McElwain have struggled to choose between sophomore Treon Harris and redshirt freshman Will Grier. There has been quite the intense quarterback battle in Gainesville, but eventually, with the month of September, a decision was going to have to be made.
On Wednesday, McElwain announced that it will be the sophomore Harris, who has just a little more game experience under his belt, that will be running the show to start the game on Saturday.
But, it must be pointed out that while Harris will be the one getting things started off against New Mexico State, both quarterbacks will see some playing time. So, all hope is not lost just yet for Grier to jump into the saddle.
Harris started the final six games of the season for Florida last year, taking over for the much-maligned Jeff Driskel. In nine total appearances in 2014, Harris threw for 1,019 yards with nine touchdowns and four interceptions. He also showed what he can do with his legs, rushing for 332 yards and three scores.
