Bowling Green takes on No. 25 Tennessee in the first weekend of college football action. The two teams, who have never faced each other before, are both coming off of bowl victories and have something to prove. The Tennessee Volunteers hope to show it can win a game as a ranked team, something they haven’t been able to do since 2007. Meanwhile, the Bowling Green Falcons would love to beat a ranked team, something they have not done since they beat the University of Pittsburgh in 2008.
Tennessee receiver Alton Howard is suspended for a violation of team rules after leading the Vols in both catches and receiving yards in 2014. Running back Jalen Hurd had a productive freshman year, and the team is counting on him to perform. Watch for a break-neck pace on the offense since the Vols are known for a hurry-up offense that ranked second in the nation for the number of offensive plays per game at 84.
Bowling Green is starting Matt Johnson at quarterback after he suffered a devastating hip injury at the beginning of the 2014 that sidelined him for the remainder of the year. The Falcons finished the 2014 season at 8-6 and have good momentum coming off of a Camellia Bowl victory against South Alabama. Additionally, the Falcons did not lose a single starter on their offense, but are only seeing three starters return on the defensive side of the ball. That could make it an uphill battle for the Falcons when it comes to slowing down the Vols.
